ACT RHETORIC
TRANSITIONAL LOGIC:
The ACT tests students' ability to transition between ideas within a sentence, a paragraph, or a whole essay.
Transitions should be logically based on the meaning of the ideas between which they segue.
EXAMPLES:
- INCORRECT: All through high school, Maude was extremely interested in boys; however, she even put the moves on my best friend, Harold.
- CORRECT: All through high school, Maude was extremely interested in boys; in fact, she even put the moves on my best friend, Harold.
- INCORRECT: The film, 2001: a Space Odyssey, is a fascinating work because, though it represents a dated, 1960s view of women and minorities, it expanded what was possible with special effects technology and with thematic insight. Nonetheless, most critics agree that it is a groundbreaking work in the development of both the science fiction genre and modern film as a whole.
