ACT GRAMMAR
FRAGMENT AND RUN-ON RULES:
Sentences are made up of groups of words called clauses. There are two types of clauses: independent (can form a complete sentence by itself) and dependent (must be attached to an independent clause in order to form a complete sentence). Sentences that lack at least one independent clause are called fragments. Sentences which improperly join more than one clause are called run-ons. Both are incorrect.
RULE: Sentences must have at least one independent clause.
EXAMPLES:

RULE: Independent clauses must be joined together by a comma and a conjunction, a semicolon (see semicolon rules), a colon (see colon rules), or by making one clause dependent by adding a subordinating conjunction. A comma or a conjunction, alone, is not enough.
